Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is gearing up for a big fight against Terence Crawford. The Mexican superstar will defend his undisputed super-middleweight championship on Saturday, September 13, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Canelo, 34, from Guadalajara, started his second reign as undisputed 168-pound champion on May 3. He beat William Scull for the IBF super-middleweight title in Riyadh. After the win, he faced off with Crawford, setting the stage for their upcoming clash.
While Canelo's focus is on Crawford, he's also thinking about a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. In an interview with The Ring Magazine, Canelo said:
"I hope I have the opportunity to have the rematch with Bivol, that's the only fight at 175 I would really take. I want to tell myself 'Hey, you learned something from that fight', what things you don't need to do again. I have that thing in myself which says 'Hey, you need to show that you're a better fighter than him'."
Canelo's interest in the Bivol rematch comes from his rare loss in May 2022. Bivol beat Canelo by unanimous decision at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, defending his WBA world light-heavyweight title. It was only the second defeat in Canelo's career.
Since then, Bivol has strengthened his position. He became the undisputed light-heavyweight champion on February 22, beating Artur Beterbiev in a rematch.
Canelo wants to prove he's grown as a fighter since his loss to Bivol. But first, he'll have to deal with pound-for-pound star Crawford. The Mexican champion will put all his super-middleweight belts on the line in what promises to be an exciting showdown.
While Canelo looks ahead to Bivol, the Russian champion has his own plans. He's expected to complete a trilogy with Beterbiev in early 2026.
