Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the former boxing champion, got detained by U.S. Marshals in Los Angeles. They're going to send him back to Mexico through the San Ysidro border crossing.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says Chavez Jr. might have ties to the Sinaloa Cartel. There's also an active arrest warrant for him in Mexico. They say it's about moving guns, bullets, and explosives around illegally.
Chavez Jr. just fought Jake Paul on June 28. He lost that fight and got $750,000 for it. But people criticized him for not being ready for the match.
Earlier this year, Chavez Jr. got in trouble for having illegal weapons in the U.S. They let him out on bail and sent him to rehab.
"He is my daughter's uncle... I know him well. And he is a good person with me, he is a great person,"
Chavez Jr. said this about Ovidio Guzman, also known as "El Raton," in 2022. Guzman is the son of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, a big name in the Sinaloa Cartel.
Chavez Jr.'s wife, Frida Muñoz, used to be with Edgar Guzman Lopez. Edgar was another son of "El Chapo." This connection has put Chavez Jr. in the spotlight for reasons outside of boxing.
The Chavez name means a lot in boxing. But Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been in the news more for his problems than for his fights lately. His drug issues and scandals have made people lose faith in him.
Now, with this arrest and his connections to people involved in organized crime, Chavez Jr. is in hot water that goes beyond just sports.
