Teofimo Lopez has set his sights on a new opponent after pulling out of a fight with Devin Haney. The WBO super-lightweight champion now wants to face the winner of the Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach rematch.
Lopez and Haney were close to agreeing on a 145lb catchweight bout in Saudi Arabia for August. But Lopez decided not to go through with it, leading to criticism from Haney on social media.
In a recent interview, Lopez explained his new target:
"August 16, Gervonta 'Tank' Davis, Lamont Roach, the repeat. I look forward to beating them afterwards."
Davis and Roach are set for a rematch in Las Vegas this summer. Their first fight in March ended in a controversial majority decision draw, with Davis retaining his WBA lightweight title.
A fight between Lopez and Davis would be huge for boxing. If Roach pulls off an upset, he'll also be in the running to face Lopez. Either way, the winner might need to move up to 140lbs to make the fight happen.
Lopez hasn't fought since beating Arnold Barboza in May. He claims Haney needs an impressive win to get a shot at him. The collapse of their planned fight was first reported by ESPN, with Lopez citing personal reasons for backing out.
With Lopez eyeing new opponents, fans will have to wait and see how the lightweight and super-lightweight divisions shake out in the coming months.
