Julio Cesar Chavez Jr will face Jake Paul in a cruiserweight bout on June 28. The former WBC world middleweight champion will take on the controversial ex-YouTuber at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Chavez Jr, now 39, held the WBC middleweight title from 2011 to 2012. He picked up notable wins over Andy Lee and Peter Manfredo Jr during that time. His reign ended when Sergio Martinez dethroned him, and since then, he's struggled to live up to the expectations set by his father's legendary career.
Julio Cesar Chavez Sr won world titles in three divisions over a 115-fight career. His son hasn't quite reached those heights, but he's still active and looking for big opportunities. Almost a year ago, Chavez Jr beat MMA fighter Uriah Hall by unanimous decision.
Now, he'll take on Jake Paul. The 28-year-old from Cleveland has turned from making YouTube videos to professional boxing. He's aiming for a world title shot, but Chavez Jr could derail those plans.
The fight gives Chavez Jr a chance to prove himself again. Canelo Alvarez, speaking to Fight Hub TV, thinks it's a good opportunity for his countryman:
"I'm rooting for Chavez, I think it's a chance for him to redeem himself and it's a great opportunity, I fully trust that he'll secure that victory, I wish him all the best. Julio should win, with good preparation and focus he should come out on top."
The fight will take place at cruiserweight, which is a step up for both men. It's set for eight rounds, giving both fighters plenty of time to make their mark. With Chavez Jr's experience and Paul's determination, it's shaping up to be an interesting clash of styles and generations.
