Frank Warren has hinted at a possible comeback for former world champion Billy Joe Saunders. The promoter's recent comments suggest Saunders might soon step back into the ring.
Many fighters find it hard to stay retired from boxing. Just look at Tyson Fury, who announced his retirement on social media in January after losing twice to Oleksandr Usyk. But now, it seems another British boxer might be eyeing a return.
In an interview with talkSPORT Boxing, Warren revealed that Saunders paid him a visit a couple of weeks ago. They talked about a potential comeback, with Saunders feeling confident he can drop from light-heavyweight to super-middleweight after a few fights.
Saunders explained his motivation:
"There's a lot of questions, a lot of demons inside me I need to get out. There's only one way to get them out and to answer the questions and that is by getting back in the ring. Let's see what I've got left there."
The former WBO champion last fought in May 2021 against Canelo Alvarez in the US. Saunders started well, winning early rounds, but suffered a broken orbital bone from an uppercut. He retired on his stool after the eighth round.
While Saunders ponders his return, many hope Fury will change his mind and come back for a big fight with Anthony Joshua. The heavyweight division remains as exciting as ever.
Saunders' potential return also brings up his rivalry with Chris Eubank Jr. The two fought in 2015 at a Warren event, with Saunders winning by a narrow points decision. There's been talk of a rematch ever since, fueled by their mutual dislike.
Eubank Jr recently beat Conor Benn in a tough 12-round war in April. Before that fight, Benn tried to get under Eubank's skin by asking Saunders to check Eubank's hand wraps, showing how their rivalry still affects the boxing landscape.
With Saunders possibly coming back and old rivalries still simmering, British boxing fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming months.
