Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez wants to settle some unfinished business before he hangs up his gloves. The Mexican boxing superstar has his sights set on two fighters he'd love to face: Dmitry Bivol and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Canelo's career spans nearly 70 fights. He's won world titles in four weight classes and became the first undisputed super-middleweight champion of the 'four belt era'. At 34, the Guadalajara native has already left an indelible mark on the sport.
Canelo's run at 168lbs has been particularly impressive. He's racked up wins against tough opponents like Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders, and Gennadiy Golovkin in their third bout. He's also added Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia to his list of conquests.
But there's one loss that still nags at him. Canelo moved up to 175lbs and lost to Dmitry Bivol. Now, he wants another shot. He told The Ring Magazine:
"I hope I have the opportunity to have the rematch with Bivol, that's the only fight at 175 I would really take but we'll see. I want to tell myself 'Hey, you learned something from that fight', what things you don't need to do again. I have that thing in myself which says 'Hey, you need to show that you're a better fighter than him'."
Bivol currently holds unified champion status at 175lbs, making this rematch a real possibility.
But there's another fight Canelo dreams of, even if it's unlikely to happen. He wants to avenge his 2013 loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. In an interview with DAZN Boxing, Canelo said:
"Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it's not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn."
Canelo's not sitting idle while dreaming of these fights. He's got a busy schedule ahead. On May 3, he'll face William Scull for the IBF super-middleweight championship. His goal? To become undisputed champion at 168lbs for the second time.
Later this year, Canelo might square off against Terence 'Bud' Crawford. That fight's penciled in, but not set in stone yet.
Canelo's in the final stretch of his career now. He can pick and choose his fights. While the Mayweather rematch is a long shot, the Bivol fight could happen. Either way, Canelo's got plenty left to prove before he calls it quits.
