Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn are set to face off in a middleweight bout this weekend, but Chris Eubank Sr claims the fight won't happen due to weight class rules.
The match was originally scheduled for October 2022 but got pulled when Benn failed a doping test. Since then, Benn protested his innocence and had his provisional suspension in the UK lifted late last year. This paved the way for talks to reschedule the fight.
The bout is slated for the 160-pound middleweight limit, with Eubank Jr facing a 10-pound rehydration clause on the morning of the fight. Benn will move up two divisions from his usual 147 pounds.
Despite official confirmation that the fight is on, Chris Eubank Sr, the former super-middleweight champion and father of Chris Jr, insists it won't happen. In an interview with Sun Sport, he stated:
"I know [it won't happen]. I don't think. I don't believe. I know. I know exactly what's going to happen. When I say this fight's not going to happen, it's not cause of me, it's cause the rules are set, the rules are in place. I'm steadfast by the rules. That's why the fight won't happen. It's not meant to happen because the weights are wrong."
This isn't the first time Eubank Sr has opposed the match. Back in October 2022, he said the contest shouldn't and wouldn't happen, though he didn't specify why at the time.
The boxing world continues to buzz with predictions. Some favor Eubank Jr for his experience, while others back Benn, citing his youth, perceived power, and aggression.
As fight night approaches, fans eagerly await to see if the bout will indeed take place. Meanwhile, Chris Eubank Jr has issued a stern warning to his opponent, adding another layer of intrigue to this already controversial matchup.
