Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez plans to leave his comfort zone and move up in weight. The super middleweight champion wants to challenge Dmitry Bivol at light heavyweight after his upcoming fight.
Canelo will defend his WBO, WBA, and WBC titles against William Scull on Saturday, May 3, at the Riyadh Arena in Saudi Arabia. If he wins, he'll add the IBF belt to become the undisputed champion of all organizations at 168 pounds.
But Canelo's not stopping there. He's got his eyes on a bigger prize - a rematch with Dmitry Bivol at 175 pounds. Canelo said:
"I hope I get the opportunity to have that rematch with Bivol, it's the only fight at 175 (pounds) that I really want, but we'll see."
Canelo's been dominating the super middleweight division since 2019. He's faced criticism for staying in his comfort zone. Now, he's ready to prove his critics wrong by moving up to light heavyweight again.
The Mexican boxer sees his previous defeat to Bivol as a learning experience. He's determined to show he's the better fighter. Canelo explained:
"I take that defeat as a learning experience, but I want to have the opportunity to prove my superiority in the future. You need to show that you are a better fighter than him."
Canelo's successfully managed his image to become the face of Mexican boxing worldwide. He usually fights twice a year - once in May and again in September, around Mexican Independence Day celebrations.
If all goes well against Scull, we might see Canelo back in the ring on Saturday, September 13, possibly against Bivol. It's a bold move that shows Canelo's not afraid to take on new challenges and prove himself at higher weight classes.
