Ryan Garcia and Rolando Romero are getting ready to fight for the WBA Welterweight Regular Title next month. The match will be called "Fatal Fury: Times Square" and it's the first time both fighters will compete at 147 pounds.
Garcia's last fight was against Devin Haney in April 2024. He won by majority decision, but the result was changed to a no-contest when Garcia tested positive for a banned substance during fight week. Before that, Gervonta Davis stopped him in seven rounds.
Romero, known as "Rolly," used to be the WBA Super Lightweight World Champion until Isaac Cruz beat him. His last fight was in September 2024, where he won on points against Manuel Jaimes. Like Garcia, Romero has also lost to Gervonta Davis, who stopped him in six rounds.
The fight probably won't go all 12 rounds. Between them, Garcia and Romero have 33 knockout wins, so fans can expect some fireworks in the ring.
Gervonta Davis, who's fought both men, shared his thoughts on the matchup. He said:
"I ain't gonna lie, Rolly hit harder. People are sleeping on Rolly. He hasn't got a chin so Rolly gets caught but he can hit. He's the only person I have felt. When he swung it felt like there were bricks in his hands."
Davis made these comments before his controversial draw with Lamont Roach Jr. He thinks Garcia will win, but he's hoping for a Rolly victory, which he says would be a "big upset."
The fight is part of a bigger boxing event in Times Square. If Garcia wins and Devin Haney beats Jose Ramirez in their upcoming bout, we might see a rematch between Garcia and Haney. Their first meeting early last year was quite eventful, so a second fight would definitely get fans excited.
