Gervonta Davis, the boxing star known as 'Tank', has shared his thoughts on a potential rematch between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia. The two fighters clashed earlier this year in a bout that ended in controversy.
Garcia initially won the fight by majority decision, even dropping Haney three times. But the result was later changed to a no contest when Garcia tested positive for Ostarine, a banned substance.
Davis, who beat Garcia in 2023, believes Haney could win a rematch if he changes his approach. He said:
"I mean, if he be able to slip the hook, he'll be able to go ahead and [win] … Haney had him. In the beginning of the fight he had him, he just tried to press the issue and stay right there."
'Tank' thinks Haney started strong but made a mistake by staying too close to Garcia. Davis admits he was happy when Garcia first got the win. He doesn't like Haney's father and trainer, Bill, and his confidence.
"No lie, bro, off of that situation, I really was happy that Ryan whooped his ass. Cause his pops, oh my god, I was happy. I broke the TV. I slapped it so hard when he got dropped. I should've [put money on it.]"
The fight between Haney and Garcia got a lot of attention. Garcia had moved up a weight class and missed the weight limit. Haney held the WBC Super Lightweight World Title at the time. The two agreed to a deal so the fight could go ahead.
Before their clash, Garcia had lost to Davis in 2023. It was Garcia's first pro loss, with Davis dropping him twice in a 136-pound catchweight bout. Garcia later said the weight limit affected his performance.
Right now, Davis is getting ready for a rematch with Lamont Roach Jr after their recent fight ended in a controversial draw. Haney and Garcia are both set to fight on May 2 in Times Square, but not against each other. Haney will face Jose Ramirez, while Garcia takes on Rolando 'Rolly' Romero.
