Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn are set to face off in a highly-charged boxing match on April 26 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The announcement has stirred up controversy, mainly due to the significant weight difference between the fighters.
The bout marks a renewed attempt to stage this fight after a previous cancellation in October 2022. That match fell through when Conor Benn failed a doping test. Since then, Benn, now 28, faced a suspension lasting nearly three years. The ban was lifted late last year, during which time Benn fought twice overseas.
For this upcoming fight, both boxers are making weight adjustments. Benn will move up from 147 to 160 pounds, while Eubank Jr will come down to a catchweight of 157 pounds. There's also a rehydration clause limiting Eubank Jr to 170 pounds on the morning of the fight.
Chris Eubank Sr has voiced strong opposition to the match. In a YouTube video, he stated:
"Conor Benn versus Jr will not happen. Heavyweights fight heavyweights, cruiserweights fight cruiserweights, middleweights fight middleweights, welterweights fight welterweights. If these rules are flouted by the promoters they have to have their licences revoked."
Despite Eubank Sr's objections, the promotion is moving forward at full steam. Eubank Jr, the bigger and more experienced fighter, will face off against Benn in what promises to be an intense showdown.
