Lamont Roach Jr and Gervonta Davis fought to a majority draw in a closely contested 12-round bout on March 1. The fight could have gone either way, keeping fans on the edge of their seats throughout.
The match wasn't without controversy. In the ninth round, Davis took a knee, but referee Steve Willis didn't call it an official knockdown. This decision sparked outrage among fans and pundits, who felt the referee had made a crucial error.
With the draw, many expected a rematch between Roach and Davis to settle the score. However, an unexpected opportunity has emerged for Roach.
Unbeaten WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson has offered Roach a world title shot. Roach confirmed this offer during an appearance on the "It Is What It Is" podcast.
"We already talked to Shakur and he's on board. I talked to him personally and he was like 'we can run it,'" Roach said.
Stevenson backed up this claim on social media, writing:
"And if Lamont can't get a rematch I got a big fight for him and a world title shot against me.. that's my bro but we def can make something happen."
Stevenson's offer comes on the heels of his recent fight on February 22. He defended his WBC lightweight crown with a comprehensive stoppage victory over British fighter Josh Padley, who stepped in on short notice after Floyd Schofield pulled out due to illness at the start of fight week.
For Roach, this presents an intriguing dilemma. Does he pursue a rematch with Davis to settle their unfinished business? Or does he seize the opportunity for a world title shot against the undefeated Stevenson? The boxing world will watch with interest as Roach makes his decision.
