Shakur Stevenson thinks Lamont Roach Jr. will beat Gervonta Davis if they fight again. The boxer shared his thoughts in a recent chat with Fight Hub TV.
Stevenson knows Roach Jr. well. They've sparred together, and Roach helped Stevenson get ready for his fight with Oscar Valdez. This experience gives Stevenson confidence in Roach's skills.
"I like Lamont in the rematch. I sparred with Lamont. I knew he was a good fighter and he helped me prepare for the fight against Oscar Valdez. I knew, because of his style and Tank's, what he was going to bring."
When asked about how Roach could improve for a rematch, Stevenson kept his cards close to his chest. He's aware he might face either fighter in the future.
"I can't tell you what plans I have because I might be fighting these guys. So I'll keep my secrets, but the truth is that they are both good fighters."
Stevenson has tried to get a fight with Davis, nicknamed "Tank", for a while now. But the Baltimore native doesn't seem interested. This hasn't stopped Stevenson from critiquing Davis' performances.
Some folks wondered if Davis wasn't mentally ready for the Roach fight. Stevenson doesn't buy it. He thinks Davis fought like he always does.
"No, it was the same Tank. I don't think so. I can't think of anything that makes me think it wasn't the same person as in all those other fights. I think it was the same person."
He added:
"Everything that's going on, everybody goes through it. It's the same fighter. So he's going to be the same fighter throughout his career."
While Stevenson is keen to face top opponents, his style isn't a favorite among boxing experts. There's talk he might end up fighting lesser-known boxers like Padley or Harutyunyan instead.
For now, Stevenson's predictions about a Davis-Roach rematch are just that - predictions. We'll have to wait and see if the fight happens and if Stevenson's sparring insights prove true in the ring.
