Teofimo Lopez called out the media for their treatment of Gervonta Davis after his recent draw with Lamont Roach Jr. The WBO super lightweight champion believes reporters are unfairly targeting Davis following his performance in early March.
Lopez shared his thoughts on the PorterWay podcast, warning young boxers about the fickle nature of media attention. He noticed a stark contrast in how reporters treated Davis before and after the fight.
"They don't care about us. They will never care about us. When you win, they'll be there, but they're waiting for any moment to make a mistake."
The Brooklyn native pointed out that before the bout, media members showed love to Davis and laughed at his jokes. However, after the controversial draw, many were quick to criticize the Baltimore southpaw.
Lopez admitted his own motivation for speaking out. "It's because I want to fight him. That's me. I can say that," he explained, acknowledging his desire to face Davis in the ring.
This marks a shift in Lopez's stance. In January, he criticized Davis' knockout record in an interview with Essentially Sports.
"I think a lot of people just focus on the knockouts he gets, but against who? They're not experienced fighters."
Before the draw with Roach, Davis boasted an impressive record of 30 wins, zero losses, with 28 knockouts. The recent result has sparked debate in boxing circles and, according to Lopez, unfair criticism from the media.
Lopez's comments highlight the complex relationship between boxers and the press. He urges young fighters to be cautious, suggesting that media support can be fleeting and opportunistic.
As both Lopez and Davis continue their careers, the potential for a future matchup between the two remains an intriguing prospect for boxing fans.
