Keyshawn Davis, the new WBO lightweight champion, doesn't think Gervonta Davis got exposed in his recent fight against Lamont Roach. Davis, known as 'Tank', faced an unexpected challenge from Roach in a bout that ended in a majority decision draw.
Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, was expected to win easily against Roach. But the fight didn't go as planned. The judges scored it 115-113 for Davis and 114-114 twice. A controversial moment in the 9th round played a big role in the outcome. Davis took a knee, but the referee didn't score it as a knockdown. If he had, Roach would've become the new champion.
Keyshawn Davis, who recently knocked out Denys Berinchyk in 4 rounds to win the WBO lightweight title, shared his thoughts on the fight. He spoke to The Porter Way Podcast about Davis' performance:
"I don't think he got exposed. I just think Lamont was better than everyone expected him to be. Lamont can really fight. I said that I thought Tank would knock him out so he proved me wrong. Lamont is better than we made him out to be but I don't think Tank got exposed or nothing like that."
Davis admitted he was wrong in predicting a knockout win for 'Tank'. He praised Roach's fighting ability, saying he's better than most people thought.
The lightweight division (135lbs) is heating up. Davis will likely face Roach in a rematch this summer. Keyshawn Davis might defend his WBO title against Edwin De Los Santos next.
The unexpected challenge Roach presented to Davis has shaken up the lightweight scene. It's clear that the division is full of talented fighters ready to test the champions.
