Ryan Garcia wants to fight Gervonta Davis again. But this time, he's set a condition: Davis must move up to 147 pounds.
Garcia's call for a rematch comes after his first career loss to Davis last April. In that fight, Davis knocked out Garcia in the seventh round at 136 pounds. Many people thought Garcia looked weak at that weight, and there was a strict rule about how much water he could drink after the weigh-in.
During an interview on the "Ring Champs with AK & Barak" show, Garcia explained why he wants the rematch:
"I know I can do way better and I know I can beat him. This is boxing bro, this is what we gotta do [go up weight divisions]. You know Roberto Duran went up like 8, 9 or I don't know how many weight classes."
Garcia thinks he and other boxers have the skills to beat fighters in higher weight classes. He said, "A lot of the guys in the bigger division ain't even that good in my opinion."
Davis, known as 'Tank', holds the WBA lightweight title. He's knocked out 27 opponents in his 12-year career. But his last fight earlier this month ended in a draw against Lamont Roach Jr. Some people said Davis didn't fight as well as usual.
Right now, both fighters have other plans. Garcia will face Rolly Romero on May 2 in New York. He's also dealing with a suspension for failing a drug test before his planned fight with Devin Haney.
Davis is expected to have a rematch with Roach this summer.
It's not clear if Davis will agree to move up to 147 pounds for a rematch with Garcia. But if it happens, it will be a very different fight from their first meeting at 136 pounds.
