Errol Spence has a message for Canelo Alvarez about Terence Crawford. The former welterweight champion warns Canelo with just five words: "If anyone can, Crawford can."
Spence's warning comes from his personal experience. He faced Crawford in July 2023 for the undisputed welterweight championship of the 'four belt era'. Crawford stopped Spence in the ninth round, capturing all four world titles at 147lbs.
In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Spence shared his thoughts on a potential Crawford-Canelo matchup:
"I'll be going for 'Bud' if he fights Canelo, I'll be going for him. I don't know if he's going to win or lose but I'll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off."
Spence added: "He's chasing greatness so why not. Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he doing then why can't 'Bud' do it."
Canelo is getting ready for his next fight. He'll face William Scull on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, defending his IBF super middleweight title. This bout kicks off a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season.
If Canelo wins against Scull, he might face Crawford in September in Las Vegas. This fight would give Crawford a shot at becoming a five-weight world champion. For Canelo, it's a chance to become a two-time undisputed champion at 168lbs.
Crawford, known as 'Bud', has already proven himself as the undisputed welterweight champion. Now, he's aiming even higher. Canelo, on the other hand, has fought at various weights, including 175lbs against Kovalev and Bivol.
As the boxing world waits to see if this matchup will happen, Spence's warning adds an interesting perspective. He's been in the ring with Crawford and knows firsthand what the champ can do.
