Canelo Alvarez has given a short but telling update on a possible fight with Terence Crawford. The Mexican star met with Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh in London on Saturday to talk about the match-up.
When asked about the chances of the Crawford fight happening, Canelo said simply, "Always a chance." He added, "We'll see. We're here to make the best deals."
This news comes after Crawford stepped up to 154lbs last summer and beat Israil Madrimov for the WBA super-welterweight title. That win made Crawford a four-weight world champion. Now, he's willing to jump up two more weight classes to 168lbs to face Canelo. Crawford wants to be the first fighter to beat Alvarez at super-middleweight.
Canelo didn't want to talk about Crawford before his recent fight with Edgar Berlanga. He won that bout by unanimous decision, keeping his WBC, WBA, and WBO belts.
The meeting between Canelo and Alalshikh is a big deal. Alalshikh has been a key player in most of the major boxing events over the past year. Their talk suggests the Crawford fight might be closer to happening.
Both fighters want to fight in the Spring. If they're going to face each other, they'll need to agree soon.
A boxer who has sparred with both fighters has made a bold prediction about how the fight might go. But for now, fans will have to wait and see if this super-fight comes together.
