Gervonta Davis might knock out Shakur Stevenson, according to boxing legend James Toney. The Hall of Fame fighter shared his thoughts on the potential matchup in a recent interview.
Toney spoke with Fight Hub TV after Davis' knockout win over Frank Martin. When asked about Stevenson's chances against 'Tank', Toney's answer was brief but clear: "Slept."
Davis and Stevenson are both lightweight champions with very different styles. Davis, known as 'Tank', has ended 28 of his 30 fights inside the distance. He's a power puncher who stalks his opponents in the ring.
Stevenson, on the other hand, rarely loses a minute in his fights. He's got elite footwork and defense. Some fans find his style less exciting, but Stevenson says the right opponent will bring out his best.
On paper, a Davis vs Stevenson fight looks competitive. Both fighters are undefeated and hold world titles. But Toney thinks Davis' power will be too much for Stevenson to handle.
Davis will defend his WBA belt against Lamont Roach Jr on March 1. This fight marks the beginning of the end for 'Tank'. He recently surprised fans by announcing he'll retire at the end of 2025.
"I'm retiring at the end of 2025," Davis said at a press conference. "This is the start of my retirement tour."
Davis has been less active in recent years. He fought once in 2020, twice in 2021, once in 2022, and twice in 2023.
Stevenson also has a fight coming up. He'll face Floyd Schofield on February 22 in Saudi Arabia.
With Davis planning to retire soon, a fight between him and Stevenson seems unlikely. But fans will still wonder what might have happened if these two elite fighters had met in the ring.
