Oleksandr Usyk is too good for Daniel Dubois to beat in a rematch, according to promoter Eddie Hearn. The British boxing figure shared his thoughts on the potential heavyweight clash recently.
Usyk cemented his place as one of the best boxers in any era last year. He beat Tyson Fury in May to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. The Ukrainian followed that up with a second victory over Fury this month. These wins add to his undisputed cruiserweight title from 2018 and Olympic Gold medal from London 2012.
Dubois and Usyk first met in the ring last summer. The British fighter lost by stoppage in the 9th round, but not before landing a shot that put Usyk down in the 5th. The referee ruled it a low blow, sparking controversy.
Since then, there have been calls for a rematch. Dubois wants to win back the vacated belt and become a two-time undisputed champion. But Hearn doesn't see it happening.
In an interview with iFL TV, Hearn said:
"I just think he is too good, Usyk. Listen, Dubois can punch, he is full of confidence at the moment, but I don't see him beating Usyk."
Hearn's words carry weight. He's seen Usyk's skill up close, having promoted Anthony Joshua for both of his losses to the Ukrainian.
Right now, a rematch isn't on the cards. Usyk is taking some time away from the sport after his historic year. Dubois, on the other hand, is staying busy. He'll defend his IBF title against Joseph Parker on February 22. The fight will be Dubois' first defense of the belt he picked up after Usyk vacated it.
The heavyweight division moves fast. We'll have to wait and see if Dubois can prove Hearn wrong and get another shot at Usyk down the line.
