Errol Spence Jr thinks Terence Crawford has a shot against Canelo Alvarez. The welterweight star believes Crawford's got what it takes to move up and challenge the Mexican superstar.
Crawford's been on a roll lately. He became the undisputed welterweight champion and then moved up to super-welterweight to grab the WBA title. His biggest win? That came when he stopped Spence in the 9th round of their fight, surprising many who thought it'd be close.
Now, Crawford's got his eyes on an even bigger prize - a fight with Canelo Alvarez at super-middleweight. It's a huge jump in weight, but Crawford's shown he's willing to take risks for greatness.
Spence shared his thoughts on this potential mega-fight with Fight Hub TV:
"It could happen, I mean why not? If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great then let him try to be great you know, so I'm with it. I'll be going for 'Bud' if he fights Canelo, I'll be going for him. I don't know if he's going to win or lose but I'll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off."
Spence points out that Canelo's done similar things, moving up from 147 to fight at 175 against guys like Kovalev and Bivol. So why can't Crawford do the same?
"He's chasing greatness so why not. Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he doing then why can't 'Bud' do it."
Crawford's already shown he's got the skills to dominate at welterweight and super-welterweight. His recent win for the WBA super-welterweight title proves he's serious about moving up. But Canelo at super-middleweight? That's a whole different ball game.
Top trainer Robert Garcia also weighed in on this potential matchup, but his take was a bit more concise. He summed up Crawford's chances in just three words.
Whether this fight happens or not, it's clear Crawford's not afraid to chase greatness. And if anyone can pull off the upset against Canelo, Spence believes it's Crawford.
