James Toney, a former super-middleweight world champion, has thrown some sharp jabs at Canelo Alvarez's career. The outspoken boxer claims he'd have no trouble coming out of retirement to take on the Mexican star.
Alvarez has been the big name in the super-middleweight division for nearly five years now. He made history in 2021 when he became undisputed at 168lbs. His list of wins includes names like Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith, Edgar Berlanga, Jaime Munguia, Jermell Charlo, John Ryder, and Gennady Golovkin. But he recently lost his IBF belt because he couldn't fight his mandatory challenger.
Toney, who's 56 and last fought in 2017, doesn't seem impressed. He held the IBF belt at super-middleweight from 1993 to 1994 and won world titles in three weight classes. In a recent interview, Toney didn't hold back his thoughts on Canelo:
"We put too much emphasis on Canelo. If you look at it, he's fought all these guys who are lighter than him, or they are past their prime and all of that, you can't compare this mother****er to me, dog. I fought the best fighters in their prime. I don't even want to talk about the mother****er, because he p***es me off."
Toney didn't stop there. He thinks he could still beat Canelo, even at his age:
"I could always come out of retirement and whoop his a** right now, I'd f**k him up, for real, I haven't got a problem doing that! I'd beat Canelo right now. He can be knocked out, he's not all that. He's no James Toney. He's not in my league, he can't carry my bags. Stop comparing him to me because there is no match, I would destroy him."
It's worth noting that Toney isn't the only fighter to call out Alvarez. A top-ranked boxer has also said he'd knock out the Mexican champion. The super-middleweight division seems to be heating up with these challenges to Canelo's reign.
