Vergil Ortiz has accepted a fight with Terence Crawford. The undefeated fighter with a 95% knockout ratio wants to test himself against the four-weight world champion.
Crawford won the WBA super-welterweight title in August when he defeated Israil Madrimov. Since then, he's been looking for his next challenge.
A unification clash with Sebastian Fundora for the WBC and WBO belts was on the cards. The fighters reached an agreement, but it's been pushed back. Fundora will have a voluntary defense against Errol Spence in early 2025, with Crawford vs Fundora planned for later that year.
While Crawford weighs his options, including a possible fight with Canelo Alvarez, Ortiz has thrown his hat in the ring. The 22-0 fighter recently won the WBC interim super-welterweight title in a majority decision over Serhii Bohachuk.
Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, confirmed Ortiz's readiness for the Crawford fight. He stated:
"We just want the biggest fights. We were approached about doing a Crawford fight, we accepted, but Crawford hasn't decided what he wants to do. He [Ortiz] wants to fight Crawford, we're willing to do that fight. There's a couple of other names out there, we just want the biggest best fights possible."
The ball is now in Crawford's court. Will he take on the rising star Ortiz, or pursue other options? One thing's for sure: fight fans are eager to see what's next for both these talented boxers.
