Oscar De La Hoya has taken another swipe at a boxing rival, this time setting his sights on Devin Haney.
The former champion and current promoter has been on a roll lately, calling out various figures in the boxing world. He's gone after Canelo Alvarez and Anthony Joshua, and now he's turned his attention to Haney.
De La Hoya didn't pull any punches when talking about the former undisputed lightweight champion. He told Fight Hub TV that he thinks Haney is done.
"I believe Devin Haney is a shot fighter."
De La Hoya's harsh words come after Haney's fight with Ryan Garcia in April. Garcia dropped Haney three times on his way to winning by unanimous decision, despite a worrying build-up to the fight. The result shocked many fans and experts who had expected Haney to win easily.
But the story didn't end there. The result was later changed to a no contest when Garcia failed a drug test. Now, Haney has filed a lawsuit against Garcia for battery, fraud, and breach of contract.
De La Hoya, who promotes Garcia, wasn't happy about the lawsuit. He shared his thoughts with Fight Hub TV:
"We have to deal with this frivolous law suit that they slapped on us, but that's all it is, it's noise. How can you sue somebody that beat the cr*p out of you. It doesn't make sense. What I would do is call that fighter out, get in the ring and beat his as*."
It's clear that De La Hoya thinks Haney should try to settle things in the ring rather than in court. But given how their last fight went, it's hard to say if that's what Haney wants right now.
This isn't the first time De La Hoya has stirred up controversy with his comments. He recently demanded that a former opponent "keep his name out of his mouth." It seems like "The Golden Boy" isn't afraid to ruffle a few feathers in the boxing world.
