Gervonta Davis will defend his WBA lightweight title this December, but Shane Mosley thinks the champ wouldn't stand a chance against Floyd Mayweather.
Mosley, a former multi-weight world champion himself, shared his thoughts on a hypothetical matchup between Davis and Mayweather in an interview with The Art of Dialogue. Despite the fight being unlikely to ever happen, Mosley believes Mayweather would come out on top.
"Floyd Mayweather I think wins. Pretty easily at 135. He's a little taller, he's faster, he's a boxer. I don't think Gervonta would be able to get close to him. He wouldn't be able to counterpunch Floyd cause he's too short."
Mosley's prediction stems from Mayweather's physical advantages and superior boxing skills. He points out that Mayweather's height and speed would make it difficult for Davis to land his powerful shots.
The relationship between Mayweather and Davis has soured since their split in 2022. Mayweather signed Davis to his promotion company in 2015, but the two have exchanged harsh words through the media since parting ways.
While Mosley favors Mayweather, he doesn't completely count Davis out. He remembers rocking Mayweather in their own fight and sees similar power in Davis.
"At the same time, I rocked Floyd pretty good. Gervonta seems to have the same type of power I possessed when I was younger. There's another thing, Floyd didn't like to fight southpaws back then … So that is a possibility, cause he didn't like to fight southpaws. I still think Floyd would've got him, but there's a question mark there because Gervonta Davis does punch hard and he could crack him."
While fans debate this fantasy matchup, Davis has real business to handle. He's set to defend his WBA lightweight title in December, likely against super-featherweight champion Lamont Roach.
As for Mayweather, he'll have to settle for victories in hypothetical matchups dreamed up by fellow boxing legends.
