Lennox Lewis thinks he'd knock out Oleksandr Usyk with uppercuts if they fought in his era. The retired heavyweight champ shared his thoughts in a recent chat with Boxing News.
Usyk's made a big splash in the heavyweight division. He beat Anthony Joshua twice and handed Tyson Fury his first loss. Those wins made him the undisputed heavyweight champ, a feat not seen since Lewis did it 25 years ago. Usyk's victory over Fury cemented his place at the top of the heavyweight pile.
Lewis hung up his gloves in 2003 after keeping his world titles in a scrap with Vitali Klitschko. He walked away unbeaten by any opponent he faced. In a recent interview with Boxing News, Lewis weighed in on how Usyk might have done in his day.
"I would have to compare him to Evander Holyfield and I think he would have done very well."
Lewis gave Usyk props, comparing him to Holyfield. Both fighters grabbed all the belts at cruiserweight and heavyweight, showing they can punch above their weight.
But Lewis wasn't all praise. He reckons he'd have Usyk's number:
"I don't think he would have lasted against me because I throw a mean uppercut in there and I've noticed he gets caught with uppercuts so he wouldn't have been able to stand up to my uppercuts."
The heavyweight title picture's a bit messy right now. Daniel Dubois has the IBF belt after Usyk got stripped for not fighting his mandatory challenger. We might see Usyk and Dubois go at it soon, especially since Dubois just beat Anthony Joshua.
