Shakur Stevenson Breaks Silence on Gervonta Davis Matchup: "It's Not About Money"

Gervonta Davis might step back into the ring before the year ends. The WBA Lightweight World Champion hasn't announced his next fight yet, but rumors are swirling about a potential match-up.

Davis last fought in June, defending his title with a knockout win over Frank Martin. Since then, fans have wondered about his next move. A unification bout with IBF champion Vasiliy Lomachenko fell through, and talks of a two-belt clash with WBC champ Shakur Stevenson have cooled off.

Now, Jose Valenzuela has entered the conversation. Valenzuela recently beat Isaac Cruz for the WBA Super-Lightweight World Title, sparking talk of a fight with Davis. Cruz, known as "Pitbull," was one of only two fighters to go the distance with Davis back in 2021.

When asked about facing Davis, Valenzuela told ES News:

"I don't got a date yet but I'm just moving around … Yeah of course the fans [are asking me about the Tank fight] because they were excited about it cause that's what they're hearing … Nah [not in November], I got a rematch clause with Pitbull so we're waiting for them and we'll go from there."

While Valenzuela's rematch clause with Cruz complicates things, a step-aside deal could open the door for a Davis-Valenzuela bout.

Boxing insider Dan Rafael reports that Davis could return on either November 23 or December 14. ESPN's Salvador Rodriguez adds that the event ESPN/status/1834320474773631283" rel="noopener" target="_blank">might feature

David Benavidez as a co-headliner.

For now, fans will have to wait for official word on Davis' next fight. The champ known as "Tank" has proven to be a draw, with only two opponents lasting the full distance against him. Whether it's Valenzuela or another contender, Davis' return will surely grab attention in the boxing world.
