Frank Bruno, the retired heavyweight champion, claims he would have easily beaten Tyson Fury if they had fought in Bruno's prime. The former champ didn't mince words when talking about the current heavyweight star.
Bruno, who competed in the 1980s and 1990s, faced off against legends like Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson. He's confident that Fury wouldn't have lasted in his era.
In a recent interview with DAZN, Bruno said:
"I wish Tyson the best but he knows deep down in his heart that if he was around in the days that I was younger I would eat him for dinner and breakfast as well. I'm not going to sit here and disrespect him but we're talking about the era I've been through, he's living in a different cloud to what cloud I was on."
Bruno's comments come after Fury's recent loss to Oleksandr Usyk in May. The fight was a big deal - it was the first undisputed heavyweight title bout in almost 25 years. Fury lost by points decision, admitting afterward that he had "too much fun in the ring" and plans to improve.
Fury's not giving up, though. He's set for a rematch with Usyk in December. He's sticking with the same corner team, showing confidence in his current setup despite the loss.
Bruno's era saw some of boxing's biggest names. Along with Bruno himself, fighters like Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson dominated the heavyweight scene. Bruno once said James 'Bonecrusher' Smith was the hardest puncher he ever faced.
The former champ's words suggest he thinks today's heavyweights don't measure up to his generation. While Bruno says he doesn't want to disrespect Fury, his comments clearly imply he doesn't see the current champ as an all-time great heavyweight.
As the heavyweight division continues to evolve, the debate over which era produced the toughest fighters will likely rage on. For now, Bruno's made his stance clear - in his eyes, Fury wouldn't have stood a chance back in the day.
