David Avanesyan aims to reclaim the EBU welterweight title

Former titleholder David Avanesyan is aiming to reclaim the European welterweight boxing title. The European Boxing Union has scheduled purse bids for the fight on Monday, May 6, unless Jordy Weiss, the current champion, and Avanesyan reach an agreement before that date.

Avanesyan, with a professional record of 30 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw—including 18 knockouts—first won the European title in 2019 in Bilbao by defeating Kerman Lejarraga in nine rounds. He successfully defended this title five times before vacating it to challenge WBO champion Terence Crawford in December 2022; however, he lost this bout in six rounds. Following this setback, Avanesyan returned to winning form by defeating Serge Ambomo in four rounds in December 2023.

Jordy Weiss currently holds the EBU welterweight title. Weiss maintains an undefeated record of 32 wins, no losses, and one draw with three knockouts. He initially fought Jon Miguez to a split draw in April 2023 but secured the European title against Meriton Karaxha by points decision in October 2023.

Neil Marsh, speaking about Avanesyan's ambitions said:

“We’ve been messed about a couple of times regarding potential fights but, really, we’ve been happy to be patient for the right opportunity because it’s about making the right fight. We also understand just how important the EBU title is and how big and important a part it’s played in David’s past. David has a lot of affection for the title. He grew accustomed to having the belt and being known as the European champion and he wants it back."
