Rolando Romero (15-1, 13 KOs) defeated Ismael Barroso (24-4-2, 22 KOs) in the main event of the evening organized in Las Vegas. Thus, the American won the vacant WBA world title in his super lightweight debut.
Both boxers were counted down by knockdowns during this fight. Romero hit the floor in the third round and Barroso in the ninth. As a result, the duel ended after Romero attacked in the ninth round. Barroso was squeezed into a corner, and although most of the American's blows did not hit the target, and Ismael himself continued to actively resist, referee Tony Wicks very controversially decided to stop the fight. At the moment the fight was stopped, the Venezuelan was leading on the scorecards: 76-75, 77-74 and 78-73.
