UFC Lightweight Champion Trainer Islam Makhachev Javier Mendez said that his ward can change the weight category if he beats all the main contenders for his title.
“Unlike Khabib, Makhachev is thinking about moving to a different weight. Islam told me that he once wanted to move up to the welterweight division, but he plans to clear the lightweight division first. He wants to make the most defenses of the lightweight belt,” Mendes said in an interview with The Schmo YouTube channel.
Recall that on February 12, at the UFC 284 tournament in Perth, Australia, Makhachev will defend the title from the encroachments of Alexander Volkanovski.
