Jaime Munguia after his last victory, he said that he was ready to fight for one of the main championship titles. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) decided to meet the Mexican and officially appointed a fight for the interim middleweight title between Munguia (39-0, 31 KOs) and Zhanibek Alimkhanuly (11-0, 7 KOs), the two top-ranking contenders in the division.

“The WBO Champions Committee obliged the parties to start negotiations on the fight between Jaime Mungia and Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. The parties are given 10 days to reach an agreement, ”Luis Batista-Salas, chairman of the WBO championship committee, says in an official statement.

If a deal is not reached, a promotional auction will be scheduled on March 4th. The minimum bet for a WBO middleweight title fight is $200,000.

The WBO decision comes just three days after Munguia stopped previously undefeated D'Mitrius Ballard (21-1-1, 13 KOs) last Saturday. This fight was his fifth in the middleweight division since he relinquished the WBO junior middleweight title at the end of 2019.

Initially, Alimkhanuly was supposed to fight WBO middleweight title holder Demetrius Andreyd (31-0, 19 KOs), who would instead fight for the WBO interim super middleweight title with Englishman Zach Parker.
