Zepeda knocks Vargas out in the first round

Jose Zepeda (35-2, 27 KOs) scored an early first-round victory over Josue Vargas (19-2, 9 KOs) in the main event of Top Rank night in New York City.

90 seconds after the opening bell, Zepeda landed a hard left as his opponent walked toward him, and the 23-year-old boxer collapsed heavily to the floor. Vargas was able to get up, remained visibly hurt, but for some reason the referee decided to give him a chance to continue the encounter, and after a few more punches from Zepeda, the fight was stopped.

The WBC Silver super lightweight belt was at stake in the meeting. For the 32-year-old Zepeda, it was his second win of the year.
