Triller Fight Club representatives claim to have suffered financial losses of up to $15 million due to failed attempts to set up a fight of Teofimo Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) and George Kambosos (19-0, 1 KOs).
A few days ago, the owners of Triller announced that they would give up any further attempts to stage a duel, but intend to return some of the money invested. The group is demanding, among other things, a refund of the $1.2 million deposit made in February from the IBF. In addition, Thriller is demanding that Kambosos be stripped of his status as an official challenger for the International Boxing Federation belt.
Other expenses incurred include non-refundable room reservations in the United States, as well as media and social media promotion of the event. The IBF must decide next week what to do with the Lopez-Kambosos fight next. Most likely, the rights to organize this fight will go to Eddie Hearn.
Remember, the tender for the fight for four lightweight belts took place because Lopez could not agree with his Top Rank promoters about the fee. The American was pleased that Thriller had invested as much as $6 million in organizing this duel, but did not expect that he was facing a one-year hiatus and that his biggest career fee would ultimately never be paid. In the meantime, Lopez has reached a deal with Bob Arum, and his next bouts will be on Top Rank nights.
