Famed referee John McCarthy expressed confidence that the judges made the right decision at the end of the fight between former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and Bruno Silva this past weekend at UFC on ESPN 54.
"I don't think the ref noticed the poke in the eye right before the finish, so the situation is understandable. He decided to stop the fight. As soon as he announced the stoppage of the fight, they watched the tape where they could see that he was actually poked in the eye. They needed the judges to make the part of the third round they saw count.
Based on the fact that the fight went to the third round, a technical decision could have been made. If the same thing had happened in the second round, the fight would have been ruled a no contest. You wouldn't have had a technical decision because they can only make that technical decision if the fight goes to the third round. So the commission really did the right thing in this case," Yahoo Sports quoted McCarthy as saying.
