José Eduardo Núñez Navarro (commonly known as Eduardo “Sugar” Núñez) was born on 25 July 1997 in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. Raised in a city with a strong boxing tradition, Núñez adopted the orthodox stance that would define his professional style and developed a reputation for power early in his amateur-to-pro transition.
Turning professional and rise through the ranks. Núñez turned professional in 2015 and made his pro debut on 26 September 2015. Fighting primarily in Mexico, he established himself as a fearsome power puncher: through the bulk of his rise he amassed a near-perfect knockout record, compiling an overwhelming KO-to-win ratio that made him one of the sport’s most dangerous junior-featherweight contenders. He signed with Matchroom Boxing as his profile grew and continued to move up regional and international rankings.
World title and profile as a boxer. After a string of high-profile stoppages and an IBF final-eliminator victory, Núñez captured the vacant IBF junior-lightweight (super-featherweight) world title in Japan with a unanimous decision over Masanori Rikiishi. As a world champion he entered the global scene with a record reflecting his power and activity, and he has been presented as a rising Mexican world titleholder on major promotional cards.
