Sydney Sweeney's performance as boxer Christy Martin in the new biopic 'Christy' is getting people talking. The film, which shows Martin's journey from small-town fighter to women's boxing star, will premiere on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Sweeney, who's 27, went all out to prepare for the role. She worked out three times a day and ate a ton to bulk up.
"Literally, a Chick-fil-A sandwich every hour and a milkshake. It was amazing to feel like I was turning into someone else."
The movie doesn't just cover Martin's rise in the ring. It also tackles the tough parts of her life, including a brutal attack by her ex-husband in 2010. Sweeney made sure to get the details right, especially for the domestic violence scenes.
Christy Martin herself gave Sweeney's dedication a thumbs up.
"She was really serious about her boxing. And with depicting the domestic violence she wanted to make sure everything was right. She's a perfectionist."
Martin even showed up with Sweeney at a boxing event in New York, giving her seal of approval.
Early reviews are glowing, and there's talk Sweeney might get her first Oscar nomination. But it hasn't all been smooth sailing for the actress. She faced some heat recently over an American Eagle ad campaign. Some folks thought the "good genes" tagline was offensive, while others said people were making a big deal out of nothing.
'Christy' hits theaters on November 7. With all the buzz around Sweeney's performance, it looks like this boxing biopic might pack a punch at the box office.
