Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., son of a Mexican boxing legend, got out of jail on August 24, 2025. He's now waiting for his trial in northern Mexico. The court says he might have links to organized crime.
Chavez Jr. has been in hot water for a while. Back in 2023, Mexico put out an arrest warrant for him. They thought he was mixed up with the Sinaloa Cartel and might be involved in gun and explosive trafficking.
Things got worse for Chavez Jr. on July 2, 2025. Federal agents nabbed him outside his Los Angeles home. They said he stayed in the U.S. too long and lied on his green card application. A few weeks later, on August 19, the U.S. sent him back to Mexico.
Now, Chavez Jr. is out of jail but not off the hook. If the court finds him guilty, he could end up behind bars for 4 to 8 years. The judge has given prosecutors three more months to build their case.
Ruben Fernando Benitez Alvarez, Chavez Jr.'s lawyer, isn't buying the accusations. He told reporters:
"These claims about my client are just speculation and urban legends."
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has also chimed in. They back up the claims about Chavez Jr.'s arrest warrant and his supposed ties to the cartel.
This whole mess started with immigration troubles. Chavez Jr. overstayed his visa in the U.S. and apparently fibbed on his green card application. Now he's facing much bigger problems back home in Mexico.
The Associated Press first reported on Chavez Jr. getting out of prison. As the son of a boxing great, his legal troubles have caught a lot of attention. For now, Chavez Jr. is out of jail, but his fight in court is just beginning.
