Mauricio Suleiman announced that the WBC will not insist on holding a fight between the world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and Agit Kabayel, the holder of the interim title in the same weight category, in the near future.
“We have been consistent and must remain so. We supported the unification fight for the title of absolute world champion, and we do not want to interrupt this process for now,” said the WBC president.
“Usyk is the absolute champion, he holds the WBC belt, and we will see what decisions he makes in the future. He recently had a fight, so we will consider this situation at the Council meeting at the end of the year,” added Suleiman.
It is worth noting that in the heavyweight division, the WBC also has a “silver” champion Lawrence Okolie. In this situation, the World Boxing Council may first schedule a fight between Kabayel and Okolie, and the winner will subsequently be able to claim a shot at the full belt.
