The pair first met in March at the Barclays Center in New York. Davis won a majority decision to retain his WBA lightweight title, but the fight wasn't as straightforward as many expected. Roach pushed Davis to the full 12 rounds, and a controversial moment in the ninth round raised eyebrows.
Davis took a knee after receiving a jab from Roach. The referee didn't give a count, which could have resulted in a 10-8 round for Roach. Davis claimed he had grease in his eye, but the incident left many wondering if the scorecards should have swung in Roach's favor.
On Friday, Davis was arrested near Miami, Florida for an incident that allegedly took place on June 15. This led to speculation about the status of the upcoming rematch.
However, Roach took to social media to address the situation. In a video posted online, he said:
"I heard from a little birdy that buddy home already. So for all you people that are saying "you're not fighting, you're not fighting." He had a quick spa treatment and got the f**k out of there. I want to let you all know the fight is still on and is still scheduled for August 16."
Roach's statement suggests that Davis has been released from custody and that their fight will go ahead as planned. The boxing world will now wait for an official announcement to confirm the status of this highly anticipated rematch.
