Shawn Porter Delivers Blunt Verdict on Crawford-Canelo Showdown: "Not Happening"

George Fields Feb. 13, 2025, 12:10 p.m.

Porter, who fought for 13 years and held world titles twice at welterweight, knows Crawford well. He challenged him for the WBO welterweight title back in November 2021. Now, Crawford's gearing up for the biggest test of his career against Canelo.

Canelo Alvarez, the current unified super middleweight champ, will first defend his IBF title against William Scull on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. If he wins, he'll become a two-time undisputed champion at 168lbs.

Porter shared his thoughts on the Crawford-Canelo fight with The Ring Magazine:

"It's a 50/50 fight. I just said it, and Terence is already taller than him and has the reach, you know. I'm telling y'all that's a 50/50 fight, It's actually perfect timing for both guys. Canelo Alvarez is losing big name fighters to fight against, there's really no-one else with a big name for him to fight against."

Porter points out that Crawford's height and reach advantage could play a big role. He also thinks the timing is right for both fighters, especially since Canelo's running out of big-name opponents.

The Crawford-Canelo showdown is set for September at super middleweight (168lbs). It's a huge fight with a lot on the line for both men. Crawford, who's won world titles in four weight classes, will try to prove he can hang with the bigger guys.

Canelo's fight with Scull on May 3 could set the stage for an even bigger event. If he wins, he'll head into the Crawford fight as a two-time undisputed champ at 168lbs, raising the stakes even higher.
