Amir Khan has picked Terence Crawford as the better fighter between Crawford and Canelo Alvarez. Khan, who's fought both men professionally, shared his thoughts ahead of their September showdown.
Khan faced Canelo Alvarez in May 2016, moving up two weight divisions to middleweight. The fight ended with Khan losing by knockout in the sixth round. Three years later, in April 2019, Khan challenged Terence Crawford for the WBO welterweight title. That fight also ended in the sixth round, with Crawford winning by TKO.
After his loss to Canelo, Khan rebuilt his career with two straight victories before taking on Crawford. Now, with both fighters set to face each other, Khan's unique perspective has caught attention.
In a recent interview with Ring Magazine, Khan explained his choice:
"I lean more toward Crawford, but Canelo has to be up there. Terence Crawford was a beast … He makes you miss by inches and counter you back, hit you with shots you don't see and that makes you not want to throw punches. Automatically he's using his offence as a defence. He was so precise. He has to tick all the boxes."
The upcoming fight between Crawford and Canelo is set for September 2023 at super-middleweight. It's a big move up in weight for Crawford, who's currently the undisputed welterweight champion.
The fight was confirmed after Canelo turned down a potential bout with Jake Paul. Some fans have been surprised by Crawford's current weight, seven months out from the fight.
As the only pro boxer to have faced both men, Khan's opinion carries weight. He's picked Crawford as the slightly better fighter, but the outcome of their September clash remains to be seen.
