Gervonta Davis plans to hang up his gloves at the end of 2025. The WBA Lightweight World Champion stunned boxing fans with his retirement announcement late last year.
'Tank' Davis, a 30-year-old southpaw from Baltimore, will defend his title against Lamont Roach Jr on March 1. The knockout artist has everything it takes to be boxing's biggest star but hasn't been very active. In 2023, he fought just once, stopping the previously undefeated Frank Martin.
Devin Haney, a rival of Davis, doesn't buy the retirement talk. He told reporters:
"He not retiring. There's still a lot of big fights that can be made out there. Tank knows that. I don't think he's going to retire with a lot of unfinished business."
Haney, a two-weight world champion nicknamed 'The Dream', left the lightweight ranks and could face Davis at 140 pounds in the future.
The 26-year-old Haney has had his own share of drama recently. His fight with Ryan Garcia ended in controversy. Initially ruled a majority decision loss for Haney, the result changed to a no contest after Garcia tested positive for doping.
Garcia missed weight before the fight, making him ineligible to win Haney's WBC World Title. Despite knocking Haney down three times, Garcia's actions led to a year-long suspension.
Haney has now taken legal action against Garcia, suing him for battery, fraud, and breach of contract. 'The Dream' aims to return to the ring in March.
As for Davis, fans will watch closely to see if he follows through with his retirement plans or if, as Haney suggests, there's still unfinished business in the ring.
