Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua might still face each other in the ring, despite both fighters having lost their last bouts. The matchup remains one of the most talked-about potential fights in boxing.
Fury, a former two-time world champion, recently suffered back-to-back losses against Oleksandr Usyk. In their first encounter in May, Fury failed to win the undisputed world heavyweight title, getting hurt badly in the ninth round and losing on the scorecards. Their December rematch saw Fury lose again by unanimous decision, with all judges scoring the fight 116-112 in Usyk's favor.
Joshua's recent record hasn't been stellar either. He was stopped by Daniel Dubois in September, following two consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and 2022.
Despite these setbacks, many in the sport want to see the two British heavyweights clash before they retire. Malik Scott, Deontay Wilder's trainer and a former heavyweight contender himself, shared his thoughts on the potential matchup with The Stomping Ground.
"If we're going off the last couple of fights we have to go with Tyson but it depends which 'AJ' turns up. But I also know styles make fights. Tyson is not who he was three years ago."
Scott acknowledged Joshua's ability to bounce back from poor performances:
"To me, 'AJ' had a bad outing against Dubois but I've seen 'AJ' come back from bad outings and even look impressive. If it would be 'AJ' who fought Pulev, that 'AJ' would give anybody hell. It's a good fight, it's something I would look forward to."
The fight between Fury and Joshua has been long-awaited by boxing fans. According to the Evening Standard, we might see this legacy fight as soon as 2025. Both fighters will need to overcome their recent setbacks to make this bout as significant as it could have been a few years ago.
