Gervonta Davis surprised boxing fans by saying he'll hang up his gloves in 2025. The WBA lightweight champion, known for his knockout power and tough attitude, wants to change his life.
Davis plans to fight three more times before retiring. He'll face Lamont Roach in March to defend his belt. After that, he'll have two more fights before calling it quits at the end of 2025.
'Tank' Davis has beaten some big names in his career. His most recent win came against Frank Martin. He's also taken down Ryan Garcia, Leo Santa Cruz, and Rolly Romero.
At first, Davis said he wanted to quit because boxing is "trash." But there's more to the story. He told Dan Canobbio on Twitter about his real reasons:
"I don't want to box no more because I want to do therapy, but I feel as though if I do therapy it will lose the fire I have inside me."
Davis worries that getting help might make him lose his edge in the ring. But he's thinking about his future outside of boxing too:
"I want everything out of me where I don't think about fighting again or even getting angry. I have two daughters, I'm wanting to be much softer and be more humble."
Davis wants to be a different person for his kids. He hopes therapy will help him become calmer and more humble.
Lots of boxers say they'll retire but keep fighting anyway. Davis has already named some fighters he wants to face before he's done. We'll have to wait and see if he sticks to his 2025 plan or if the lure of the ring keeps him coming back for more.
