Deontay Wilder's comeback is on the cards, and he's already got an offer on the table. The former WBC heavyweight champion's trainer, Malik Scott, has confirmed Wilder won't retire despite recent setbacks.
Wilder's last two fights didn't go his way. He lost on points to Joseph Parker and suffered a knockout against Zhilei Zhang. These losses, coupled with a lack of his once-feared aggression, led many to suggest he should hang up his gloves. The Zhang fight, in particular, raised questions about Wilder's future in the sport.
But now, WBC Bridgerweight World Champion Kevin Lerena has stepped up, offering Wilder a shot at his title. Lerena told World Boxing News:
"I've always been keen to fight Wilder. He was one of the most feared heavyweights for a very long time. Wilder is someone I respect a lot, but it's my time, and I fear no man."
Lerena didn't shy away from acknowledging Wilder's recent struggles but still showed respect for the American's power.
"Look, I know Wilder didn't lose in a positive way [against Parker or Zhang], but having said that, this is heavyweight boxing. These things can happen, but he will always be seen as a dangerous, spiteful puncher no matter what!"
The bridgerweight division, with a 224lbs limit, sits between cruiser and heavyweight. It could be a good fit for Wilder, who usually weighs between 215-220lbs. His heaviest weigh-in was 238lbs for his third fight with Tyson Fury.
Lerena gained the title when Lawrence Okolie vacated it. He's open to other big fights too, mentioning cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia as a potential opponent.
"If not Wilder, then a massive fight for the bridgerweight world title would be [cruiserweight champion at 200 pounds] Jai Opetaia and me. I think he's a class boxer, but I'm a fighter, so it makes for a good scrap!"
The South African champion plans to return to the ring around December or early next year. He's keeping his options open, saying:
"I hope to be back in the ring around December or probably early in the new year, so there's plenty of time to talk to Wilder, Opetaia, or anyone else for a massive fight."
Wilder's team previously turned down an informal offer to face Okolie. Now, fans are waiting to hear when and where the 'Bronze Bomber' will make his return. If he reconsiders, this could be his chance to become a two-weight world champion.
