IBF Cruiserweight Champion Jai Opetaya (22-0, 17 KOs) and Richard Riakpo (16-0, 12 KOs) can fight on August 23 in Australia. This was announced by Mick Francis, manager of the world champion according to the International Boxing Federation.
The boxing teams have until July 14 to reach an agreement on this issue. However, Riakpo, who is the official contender for the IBF belt, may not agree to an away fight.
Ben Shalom, the Englishman's promoter, confidently stated that this fight would take place in the fall in London. Next week, a promotional tender may be held at the choice of the organizer.
It is still unclear if Opetaya will be able to leave Australia after recent legal troubles. In extreme cases, an Australian who has not been active for a year may even be stripped of his title.
