Jeanette Zacarias Zapata (2-4), 18, of Mexico, is in critical condition after being knocked out in the fourth round on Saturday in Montreal, Canada. Zapata lost to local boxer Marie Pierre Hole (4-0-1, 2 KOs).

The Mexican athlete was able to get to her feet, but after a while she started cramping and lost consciousness. In a cruel irony, watching the fight in the ringside was Adonis Stevenson, who had to end his career in 2018 due to the head injury he suffered in his fight with Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

According to promoter Yvon Michel, Zapata has been put into an induced coma, in which she is expected to remain in for at least a few more days and has not yet required surgery. The next few weeks will determine to what extent the girl will be able to recover from this injury.
