Unbeaten Dominican southpaw Alberto Puello (21-0, 10 KOs) will make the first defense of his WBA super lightweight title against Rollie Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) May 13 broadcast on Showtime TV channel. Thus, Romero will receive a title fight in his first fight in the weight category up to 63 kg. The Las Vegas native has boxed in the lightweight division throughout his six-year professional career. In May last year, Romero lost early in the sixth round to Gervonte Davis.
The World Boxing Association (WBA) has nominated contenders to fight for the vacant world super lightweight title. Alberto Puello (20-0, 10 KOs) and Batyr Akhmedov (9-1, 8 KOs) will compete for the belt, which was recently stripped Josh Taylor.
The WBA has set April 22 as the bidding date for a world super lightweight title bout between Josh Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) and Alberto Puello (20-0, 10 KOs).
