Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez trial date set for September

Cain Velasquez, the former UFC heavyweight champion, faces a trial date of September 9 for multiple charges including attempted murder. The charges stem from an incident on February 28, 2022, where he allegedly targeted and shot at a vehicle in San Jose, California. Cain pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Judge Elizabeth C. Petersen officially set the trial date. Apart from attempted murder, Velasquez is accused of shooting at a motor vehicle, three counts of assault with a firearm, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, willfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony.

Velasquez allegedly targeted Harry Goularte during this attack because of accusations that Goularte molested Velasquez's four-year-old son. However, the shots fired injured Goularte’s stepfather who was in the vehicle at the time. After nearly nine months in jail following his arrest, Velasquez was granted conditional bail set at $1 million.

Harry Goularte also faces legal troubles himself and is accused of lewd acts with Velasquez's son. His trial setting hearing is scheduled for July. Renee Hessling represents Velasquez as his attorney.

Looking ahead to the pre-trial proceedings, a trial readiness conference is set for June 26. This will be followed by motion filings slated from August 12 to August 26. Additionally, all parties involved must submit their witness lists by September 4.

Cain Velasquez rose to fame within mixed martial arts as a prominent figure and former UFC heavyweight champion. His dramatic fall into legal turmoil shocked many fans and commentators alike. Meanwhile Harry Goularte’s case continues to develop separately as legal authorities process the grave accusations against him.
